With Offensive Overhaul, Baltimore Ravens will Look to Rebound from Heartbreaking Season
The Baltimore Ravens, one of the most stable and unwavering organizations in the league, are suddenly in transition as the team could no longer function with an offense that sputtered mightily since they last made the playoffs back in 2014. The Ravens made a statement move when they traded up into the final spot of the opening round to select Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. The decision to draft Jackson of course, didn’t sit well with current QB Joe Flacco but the maneuver was a logical one as Flacco, who enters the third season of a six-year $125 million dollar contract, simply has underperformed since signing the deal.
It’s fair to contend if Flacco will ever be able to regain the high level of play he exhibited during the Ravens’ Super Bowl run in 2012. Age and injuries have sapped the signal caller’s effectiveness and a poor supporting cast certainly hasn’t helped but the 33-year old is partly to blame for his massive contract has prevented the front office from acquiring the necessary talent to progress. Flacco will have no excuses this time around as we will benefit from some new weapons at the receiver position. Michael Crabtree will probably emerge as the new No. 1 target while former Cardinals John Brown and ex-Saint Willie Snead will serve as compliments in the receiving corps.
Despite the new additions, the unit is still shaky but at least, the tight end situation has been upgraded. The front office used two early selections including a first-rounder and a third round draftee on a pair of tight ends. Both Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews should be able to help the offense immediately as Flacco hasn’t benefited from a potent intermediate threat in quite some time. The Ravens rediscovered the running game last season after two years of stagnancy in the backfield. Alex Collins, who was picked up in September last season was a pleasant surprise as he rushed for 973 yards and six touchdowns.
The offensive line, which allowed only 27 sacks last season, will benefit from the return of guards Marshal Yanda and Alex Lewis who missed the entire season with injuries. It isn’t clear however, if the Ravens appropriately replaced center Ryan Jensen. Matt Skura is the prime candidate to replace Jensen but he has yet to start an NFL game at the position. Baltimore’s defense pretty much returns in its entirety and without the exquisite unit, the Ravens would be one of the worst teams in the league.

The Bottom Line:
Despite their great defense, the jury is still out on whether the offense can deliver the goods with an aging quarterback clearly in regression. If Flacco rediscovers his touch with the new arsenal at his disposal, the Ravens should compete for a playoff berth. If he doesn’t and the odds on him on rejuvenating his career is very much in doubt, the Ravens will remain hindered in mediocrity. Expect the latter scenario to transpire as the Ravens will fail to make past the regular season.
